Love musical theatre? Love the enneagram? Well, this is the post for you!

If you follow us on Instagram – @topknotcomedy – you may have seen this series of reels featuring my picks for the BEST BROADWAY LYRICS by Enneagram Type. This post is a recap of that – PLUS – a couple of runner up songs for each number.

Make sure you leave a comment and let me know if I NAILED your number or FAILED you. (If it’s a FAIL, make sure you tell me your pick and maybe we can do an update with more songs later – JAZZ HANDS.)

ENNEAGRAM TYPE ONE: “Don’t Break the Rules” from Catch Me If You Can
Specifically, these lyrics:
Cause the game aint worth winning if you’re breaking all the rules
The law is laid upon us when as kids we first ask why
Our parents set the rules when cause I said so they reply
And though I thought I hated them and screamed with all my might
The next time that I had a choice gee whiz I did what’s right
Though I never snuck a drink I never stole a pack of cools
Cause the game aint worth winning if you’re breaking all the rules

Enneagram Ones are rule followers. They appreciate order and routine. They can get flustered when things are done out of order or (GASP) wrong. So, these lyrics – the whole song, actually – is great for ones!

RUNNERS-UP FOR ONE:
“So Much Better” – Legally Blonde
“Facade” – Jekyll and Hyde

ENNEAGRAM TYPE TWO: “All I ask of you” from Phantom of the Opera
Specifically, these lyrics:
Say you love me every waking moment,
Turn my head with talk of summertime.
Say you need me with you now and always;
Promise me that all you say is true,
That’s all I ask of you.

Enneagram Twos love to be loved. Basically, any Broadway song that essentially says, “tell me you love me” would work for an enneagram two. Make sure the twos in your life know they’re loved! If they’re not… they may send you this link as a not-so-subtle hint. 😉

RUNNERS-UP FOR TWO:
“And I’m Telling You” – Dreamgirls
“Be Our Guest” – Beauty and the Beast

ENNEAGRAM TYPE THREE: “Popular” from Wicked
Specifically, these lyrics:
Popular!
You’re gonna be popular!
I’ll teach you the proper poise
When you talk to boys
Little ways to flirt and flounce
Ooh!
I’ll show you what shoes to wear!
How to fix your hair!
Everything that really counts to be
Popular!
I’ll help you be popular!
You’ll hang with the right cohorts
You’ll be good at sports
Know the slang you’ve got to know
So let’s start
‘Cause you’ve got an awfully long way to go!

I turn to Enneagram Threes for advice on trends, what’s hot, and general “do this now” info. So, the lyrics to “Popular” resonated as I was looking for a song for these trend-setters! As I mentioned in the YouTube video, I need threes in my life to tell me what’s cool as I HAVE NO IDEA.

RUNNERS-UP FOR THREE:
“Satisfied” – Hamilton
“My strongest suit” – Aida

ENNEAGRAM TYPE FOUR: “Much More” from The Fantasticks
Specifically, these lyrics:
I hug myself till my arms turn blue, and
then I close my eyes and I cry and cry till the tears come down
and I can taste them. I love to taste my tears. I am special.
I am special. Please, God, please, don’t let me be normal!

Enneagram Fours will be QUITE PLEASED to know this was very difficult. In fact, I had to search high and low to find this song… then this phrase isn’t actually IN THE SONG… it’s the script leading into the song. The struggle was worth it because I was thinking to myself the whole time… Fours are going to love that I struggled.

RUNNERS-UP FOR FOUR:
“On my own” – Les Miserables
“How Shall I See you Through my Tears” – Camp

ENNEAGRAM TYPE FIVE: “In My Own Little Corner” from Cinderella
Specifically, these lyrics:
In my own little corner
In my own little chair
I can be whatever I want to be

Enneagram Fives were a bit tricky as fives will be TOTALLY INTO Broadway – or TOTALLY NOT INTO Broadway. But, for those into Broadway… I think this song from Cinderella is perfect. The runners-up for Fives are two songs about history, which I think our intellectual five friends will appreciate… although they are not 100% accurate, as fives will tell us.

RUNNERS-UP FOR FIVE:
“Ex wives” – SIX the Musical
“Wait for It” – Hamilton

ENNEAGRAM TYPE SIX: “All the Wasted Time” from Parade
Specifically, these lyrics:
All the wasted time!
All the wasted time!
All the million hours!
Years on top of years,
Still too proud to crawl.
All the days gone by,
To feel that I don’t satisfy,
And I never knew anything,
At all.

At first glance, the lyrics for this Enneagram Six pick may not make sense. Make sure you watch the YouTube video or the Instagram Reel for context. The reason I picked it was to highlight the “overthinker” six. I love what littlepinkhousefly said in the YouTube comments for this one… “WOW — you put in so much work! It was excellent! I would agree with these, particularly the Six, as the song encompassed more than one aspect of our type. Loved it!”

RUNNERS-UP FOR SIX:
“Wait for it” – Hamilton
“Defying Gravity” – Wicked

ENNEAGRAM TYPE SEVEN: “Don’t Rain On My Parade” from Funny Girl
Specifically, these lyrics:
Don’t tell me not to live
Just sit and putter
Life’s candy and the sun’s
A ball of butter
Don’t bring around a cloud
To rain on my parade
Don’t tell me not to fly
I’ve simply got to
If someone takes a spill
It’s me and not you
Who told you you’re allowed
To rain on my parade?!

Enneagram Sevens were THE MOST FUN for this roundup. There are SO.MANY.SONGS I could have picked – but I kept coming back to this one. I’m glad I did – I do think it incorporates the “let me have my fun” attitude of sevens. Also, I waited to post this as the last Instagram Reel of the series and the sevens were FOMO’ing hard. Ha!

RUNNERS-UP FOR SEVEN:
“Raise you up” – Kinky Boots
“Freak Flag” – Shrek

ENNEAGRAM TYPE EIGHT: “Anything You Can Do” from Annie Get Your Gun
Specifically, these lyrics:
Anything you can do, I can do better.
I can do anything better than you.
No you can’t.
Yes I can.
No you can’t.
Yes I can.
No you can’t.
Yes I can, yes I can.

As an Enneagram Eight myself, this was an easy choice. When I first posted it on Instagram, someone commented they thought it was more of an Enneagram Three thought… and I can see that. However, the “don’t tell me what to do” attitude we eights possess is STRONG and these lyrics resonate with me HARD.

RUNNERS-UP FOR EIGHT:
“100 Easy Ways To Lose A Man” – Wonderful Town
“The World Will Know” – Newsies

ENNEAGRAM TYPE NINE: “Everything’s Alright” from Jesus Christ Superstar
Specifically, these lyrics:
Try not to get worried, try not to turn on to
Problems that upset you, oh
Don’t you know
Everything’s alright, yes, everything’s fine
And we want you to sleep well tonight

Enneagram Nines are the peacemakers and would rather take a nap than argue. Just ask a nine how long they put off making a customer service-type call. I bet there’s a nap or two that takes priority. I had a tough time finding the perfect song for this number – and I thought… Jesus is often referenced as an Enneagram Nine… maybe Jesus Christ Superstar has some good lyrics. AND I WAS RIGHT! Of course, these lyrics are sung by a different character to Jesus – but the sentiment is perfect for nines.

RUNNERS-UP FOR NINE:
“Waving Through a Window” – Dear Evan Hansen
“Happy/Sad” – Addams Family
